  • IN THE NEWS:  September 6, 2008 - Magic Reservoir conditions:   They shut the water off on the 5th and they've completely drained Magic.  Chris G. was down there and said he hasn't seen it this low for over 20 years.  The north end of the reservoir is halfway between Myrtle Point and East Side.

  •  Don Yeager made it into the Wood River Journal this week with his tales of spending the winter in Los Barilles in Baja, Mexico.  "He wants to take up kite surfing but figured he'd better have his knees checked out first."  He goes on to say "About four to six months of the year the winds howl pretty good there.  And kite surfing is the fastest growing sport for people over 50 according to the AARP because the learning curve is so much faster than windsurfing."  So, if you are finding it hard to handle windsurfing check out this article from AARP and take up the new "old mans sport", kitesurfing.

  • Brad has some new photos of him sailing on the waves at Kuau in March 2008.  Click here to see the photos.

  • I added a link to the ITD weather station at Timmerman on the Recommended Links page.  It looks like it updates every 25 minutes.

  •  We've set up a weather station at Magic Reservoir.  It is possible to make a phone call from anywhere and find out what the wind speed, temperature, wind chill and other conditions are at Magic.  If you would like to join call Jim Walker at 208-788-4893 or cell 720-4460  **Please note - I fixed the wind direction - it should be good to go.  Any donations to the wind line would be appreciated.  Just the phone line alone is $40/month.

Sailing and living the the Wood River Valley, Idaho.  We love to sail and the closest location is Magic Reservoir.  We also sail at Wilson Reservoir, CJ Strike, Redfish and Alturas Lakes and at the *GORGE* when we can.

Information

Magic Reservoir is about 35 minutes south of Hailey, Idaho.  Use the entrance off Highway 75.  Most of us sail off the West Side where there is an off-shore wind and the water is smoooooth and more consistent.  Some launch off the East Side but it can be trickier because of the wind shadow and rougher water.

You can check out the  NOAA Twin Falls page to get the forecast for wind. Look for 10-15 mph or more, from the west/southwest.  The wind typically blows during the 12:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. range.  For current wind conditions look at the Richfield Meso site.
