#27 Thurs, Sept. 28, 2006 Late, sweet surprise.  The wind started blowing at 4:00.  It was nice, warm and clear.  I only had my little board but decided to go anyway.  Got to Magic at 4:30 and rigged my 6.7 on my 85 liter board.  Sailed until 6:30, still blowing, I was planing 90% of the time.  They're still letting water out but the water is still pretty high compared to past years.  Water is a little colder but I was fine in  my light weight wetsuit.
#26 Wed, Sept. 13, 2006 Maybe the last day of the year at Magic.  Good conditions and still warm.

#25 Wed, Aug 30, 2006 It felt like fall today.  Started out the afternoon about 77o and sunny - by 6:00 it was 66o, wind chill 56o.  Challenging day: earlier it was 15, gusting to 25 and later it became 20, gusting to 32.  At 5:30 we had a peak gust of 45 mph.  Most of us changed rigs 2 or 3 times.  We were down to 4.0's by 6:00.  JW, John Mc., Ray L., Wayne S, Mark W, Ken C. (in shorty) and Chris G. were sailing.

#24 Wed, Aug 23, 2006 Sunny and 87o at Magic, a stuck-in-the-mud kind of day.  We were on 5.5 sails.  It was quite gusty at first then the wind became more NW and steady.  We sailed until the sun went down.  JW, Marc, Wade and Wayne.  All photos by Marc D.

#23 Thurs, Aug 17, 2006 I got on the water at 3:15.  It was sunny and the wind was 14, gusting to 24.  I had my 6.1 rigged.  Marc and I enjoyed the sailing even though it was up and down.  When we left at 6:30 the wind had filled in and was steady.  The kiter, Blake, never made it on the water.  He drove out on the peninsula and got his truck stuck in the mud.
#22 Sat, Aug 12, 2006 Great 5.5 day.  We were planing 80-85% of the time.  Marc, BT, Wade and Jim showed up to enjoy the afternoon.

Sailed alone in short lived but somewhat strong gusts. Planning 40% on a 6.1.  Water getting very shallow to west of Myrtle Point.

The Water Level is Going Down

#20 Tues, Aug. 1, 2006 80o and sunny at Magic.  I sailed from 4:00 until 5:30 and was planing about 60% of the time at first on my 6.5 sail.  I had fun but was wore out and when I quit at 5:30 I was planing 80%- 85% and the wind was filling in better.
#19 Sun, July 30, 2006 Nice day sailing even though it was a little "hole-y".  It was sunny and hot and good to see some of the less frequent sailors enjoying the day.  Marc D., BT, Carl, Mark W., Chris, Shaun, Scott and Brad showed up.  We were mostly on 4.7's to 5.7's.  I was on my 5.2.  The wind kept us going good for about an hour and tapered off after that.  Scott was giving water start lessons.

#18 Thurs, July 27, 2006 Another hot day, soul sailing alone.  At 3:30 I went out with my 5.7 rigged and was powered up the first 20 minutes.  Then the wind died off for a while and I was only powered up 60% of the time.  The last 45 minutes minutes were great, powered up again.  I left about 6:00 and it was still blowing.  The water is going down, it was 96o.
#17 Wed, July 26, 2006 Just a fun day soul sailing at Magic.  No other sailors.  I was on my 6.7.  HOT!
#16 Tues, July 18, 2006 It was a fun afternoon (4:30 to 7:00) of sailing at Magic in 95o, didn't even need a shorty.  I was overpowered for 45 minutes on my 6.5 but the rest of the time I was sailing easy.  BT and I were on the west side and Wade and Grille sailed from the east side later on.
#15 Mon. July 10, 2006 JW and MD sailed on 5.5 to 5.7's, planing 50% of the time.  It was real up and down.  Sometimes you needed a 6.5 and sometimes a 5.0.  Typical Magic.  The water is warmer (shorty), the lake has gone down a couple feet and needed a weed fin.  17 gusting to 28.  When we left at 7:00 the wind filled in steady from the northwest.  Photos by Marc D.

Report and photos from Marc: Fun! Not as gusty as yesterday and very little of that fin grabbing grass. Chris, Scott, Wade and I sailed on 4.7 (Scott) to 6.0? (Wade). Chris was streaking on a tiny for him 5.7.

#13 Mon, June 19, 2006 Quote from Mark W.: "There's some manly gusts out there".  Quote from Marc D.: "There are gusts within gusts within gusts."

It was definitely blowing at Magic yesterday.  Wayne lasted longest in conditions that defeated the other sailors one by one.  BT, Jim W., Chris, Jim S. (in addition to the sailors noted above) were sailing at Myrtle Point.  Wade was sailing from the east side.  The wind defeated a kiter attempting to launch from the west side.

#12 Sat, June 17, 2006 REPEAT of Friday, a little less wind.  Still had two hours on my 5.7. Same crew as Friday.

#11 Fri, June 16, 2006 Magic Reservoir - Jim, Mark W., Wayne, BT, Ray, Carl, and Wade sailed for a pretty damn good day at Magic.  I was on a 5.7 and was overpowered the last hour.  The wind kicked in from 4 until 8 pm.  The peak wind was 41, it was 74 and sunny, wind chill of 66.
#10 Thurs, June 15, 2006 I sailed alone at the pit.  Had good conditions to rip it up close to home.  Very convenient!
#9 Wed, June14, 2006 Marc and Jim sailed at the pit.  We were on 5.5's and wound up 80% of the time.  The water is warmer than at Magic.  We sailed until 7:00.  The pond at the pit has about a 400 yard reach now.  The windline at Magic was reporting 15 mph gusting to 25 with a peak of 38 at 7:50 p.m.  Did anyone sail at Magic yesterday?

#8 Tue, June 13, 2006 I was sailing alone on a cloudy afternoon, 2 coves down from Myrtle Point.  I was on my 5.7 and got blown off the water three times.  The wind was 15, gusting to 43, peak wind of 45.  RHF Metso showed a peak wind of 58.

p.s.  I thought I was the only sailor but I have heard that there were two other rogue (?) sailors at Magic yesterday.  I was down towards the dam and didn't see anyone else sailing.

#7 Sun, June 4, 2006 B.T., Mark W, Marc D, Jim and Brad enjoyed a great day at Magic.  When we first arrived it was rainy and we were on big sails.  Then it cleared off, the sun came out, the wind came up and we rigged 5.5's or 5.7's,  powered up 95% of the time. The wind was steady, 80o.  The lake is about 2 feet from being totally full.  The water is a little warmer than it was last month.

Hidden Camera Reveals Idaho's Newest Sailing Spot

Marc D., Jim and Brad were spotted sailing at Walker Lake, 4 miles south of Bellevue.  Sources tell us that the water was much warmer than the water at Magic Reservoir.  The sailors stated that they were planing 30-50% of the time on this new pond, with a 250 yard reach.

#5 Tues, May 23, 2006 We had fun today even though we were on 6.5 sails and only planing 40% of the time.  It was great to get out on the lake, which is full, only about 4 feet from max. capacity.  It was sunny, about 70%, the wind was 10 gusting to 26.  Kim, Brad, Marc D. and Jim W. were sailing.

Eight Thumbs Down

#4 Fri, May 12, 2006 Brad considered this the best day at Magic so far this year.  Marc and Jim were sailing with him on 5.5 to 5.8 sails.  It was sunny and 76o.  The water is down about a foot again.
#3 Mon, May 8, 2006 Chris, Brad and Jim were the only sailors to brave another cool day.  It was sunnier and windier than the conditions Sunday.   Wind chill was 39 degrees!  We were on 5.2 sails again, Brad was on an 85 ltr. board.  Chris explored the lake looking for a new launch site near the dam.  Not a successful mission.
#2 Sun, May 7, 2006 Cloudy, cool day with light rain.  At 4:00 wind was 25 mph, gusting to 41.  Peak wind was 45.  Temp was 45 to 55, wind chill 37!  Carl, Jim W, Brad, Marc and Chris braved the cool day to get their sailing fix.  Most of us were on 5.2 sails.  We tried a new flat spot on the south side of Myrtle Point where you can stand up on both sides.  Click photo to see album with all photos by Marc D.
#1 Sun, April 30, 2006 Carl W. was first sailor on the water.  Wind was weak at first, then by 1:30 we were all on 5.0 sails.  Marc D, Jim W, Jim S, Mark W and Ray L were all sailing with Carl.  Beautiful sunny day, 22 gusting to 33.  Still about 4 feet before the reservoir is full.  Photos by Jim S.  Click on a photo to see an enlargement.  More photos from Marc D below.
